When the Painted Saltbox Gallery first opened in 1997, the mandate was not only to showcase the acrylic paintings of artists Tom Alway and Peter Blais, but also to design and build heritage reproduction furniture in the German tradition of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia

The first pieces were largely architectural in nature, and included large corner cupboards and wardrobes.  Soon, there followed farm tables, dry sinks, lamp tables.  Reproduction folk art pieces were added to the repertoire, followed by lamps, games tables and benches.

Some Standout Pieces and Currently Available Work in the Gallery

In time, more and more gallery space was required for fine art and the emphasis on furniture diminished and transitioned from reproduction to modestly scaled contemporary, art furniture pieces, drawing heavily on the lively folk art tradition of rural Nova Scotia.

The Gallery continues to showcase a selection of contemporary, painted furniture pieces and handcrafted lamps as a colourful compliment to the bold acrylic paintings of artists Tom Alway and Peter Blais.  Pictures of new pieces will be posted here from time to time.
